Our role as a carbon sales agent

FCOTI will be the carbon sales agent on behalf of GTNT based on Service Agreement between FCOTI and GTNT for the project.

FCOTI has formed a 30 year PES agreement with the farmers to implement community based reforestation project.

At the current scale the project will not be able to pay for future plantings from the sale of carbon credits. Annual tree plantings will either be funded from international donor funding or through tree sales to individuals or progressive organisations.

Responsibilities of farmers

Participating small holder farmers will be responsible for:

  • Preparing their land and planting the trees

  • Water weed and mulch the tree for the first three years

  • Following the agreed maintenance and thinning program

  • Measure and count the tree annually

BENEFITS AND RIGHTS

  • Participate in the training FCOTI provides to help them achieve the targets as described above;

  • Receive an annual carbon payment for eligible trees for ten years per planting site

Our Responsibilies

FCOTI with the long term backing of GTNT will be responsible for:

  • Providing annual training for farmers that want to become involved

  • Provide training for existing farmers to ensure they maintain and account for their trees accurately

  • Introduce other funding and donor partners to the scheme to pay for additional plantings

  • Sell the carbon credits to institutional buyers

  • Manage the ex-ante payments in a trust fund with co signatories from framer representatives

  • Verify farmer estimates of tree growth and survival

  • Organise annual payments to farmers

  • Ensure farmers will get a maximum of 10 annual payments per planting site

Benefit Sharing

60% of all carbon sales and tree planting income will go directly to farming families that participate in the project.

FCOTI will use the balance of the funds to undertake project support activities and create a project cash contingency to be able to undertake verification and validation activities for the 30-year life of the project.

The contingency is established to ensure that:

  • Verification and validation activities can occur even if the growth phase of the project ceases after say 10- years.

  • Verification and validation can extend beyond the 30-year life of the project if the project continues to grow up to and beyond the current 30-year timeframe.
